Why Use Self-Hypnosis?
By Steve G. Jones
Self-hypnosis is also known as auto-hypnosis and is a form of hypnosis that is
self-induced, using self-suggestion or autosuggestion. It can be very relative what can be put under the term
self-hypnosis. Most of the people have experiences with some trans-like state in their everyday life, though they
do not accept them as (self) hypnosis. For example, listening to some pre-recorded audio or another media can be
also considered as form of hypnosis.
Other examples: being into a daydream state, becoming completely engrossed into some
book or project, or being totally absorbed in your thoughts while driving a car, so you can miss the next turn. The
difference between these trance-like states and self-hypnosis is that the first happens spontaneously while the
self-hypnosis happens with specific motivation and suggestions toward some goal.
However, we all know what it means when we talk about hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is
deliberate process with some purpose. It is proven method of achieving altered state of consciousness, and today's
medicine uses different types of hypnosis, including self-hypnosis, in hypnotherapy.
Most of the people think of hypnotism as a mysterious and even dangerous phenomenon
misused for mind control. Of course, there can be such manipulations, but self-hypnotism is proven useful clinical
tool for many medical or psychotherapy practices that can help people to make significant changes in their
lives.
Self-hypnosis is one of the altered states of consciousness characterized by a sense
of peaceful relaxation and highly increased suggestibility. When you are under hypnosis, you are conscious but
detached, meaning that you are able to observe what is happening but not in charge of it.
As your body and mind are very suggestible under hypnosis, it is possible that some
of the show-buzz hypnotist can make you acting like a monkey on a stage, but used by reputable hypnotherapist or by
yourself, many useful things and suggestions for your life can be done. Self-hypnosis is a very effective help for
those seeking positive changes in their life. Practically everyone can learn how to use self hypnosis. Let us
mentioned few specific changes you can achieve through self-hypnotism:
-
Stop bad habits such us drug use, smoking, alcoholism, etc.
-
Manage most different types of stress
-
Increase ability to concentrate, memory, etc.
-
Improve physical performances
-
Increase your self-confidence
-
Overcoming sleeping problems
-
Achieving different goals such us exam success, weight loss and many
others
If it is properly trained, self-hypnosis is a completely safe, non-toxic and is
usually far more effective than painkillers and tranquillizers, for example. It is an excellent ability to
rejuvenate both your physical body and your mind, leading generally to a greater sense of well being.
As a state of mind in which suggestions are acted far more powerfully than into
normal conditions, self-hypnosis (s well as hypnosis in general) makes you achieve a heightened focus and awareness
of your consciousness. By suppressing the critical faculty, (auto)suggestions are passed directly to your
unconscious mind. It will accept them and make them your habits.
It is critically to learn self-hypnosis from scientifically proven sources such us
specialists and hypnotherapists. You can also find CDs or books with curses on this ability, but you must be sure
about their credibility as well. There should be no improvisations with achieving an altered state of consciousness
such us hypnosis, especially when you make it by yourself.
From the right hands of proven expert to your hands (and mind), self-hypnosis will be
a great tool to support your complete growth, including the spiritual one. You can easily learn to provide hypnotic
suggestions to yourself, but you have to avoid any possibility of abuse.
It is also good to know that your self-induced hypnosis cannot be as deep as it is a
case when you are hypnotized by a specialist or hypnotherapist. This is because you have to stay in control over
yourself in order to be able to make the suggestions. However, this should not stop you. With the time, you will
become quite able to perform self-hypnotic séances that will be strong enough to help you overcome most of the
problems in your life.
It is also very important to properly choose a technique of self-hypnosis that is
most appropriate to you. Generally speaking, you need a quiet place to sit or lay down. Than you should relax
yourself without falling asleep - you can count down from 100. When relaxed enough, you can start repeating some
affirmations connected with suggestions you want to put into your subconscious. At the end of the session, slowly
waken yourself with suggestion that you will open your eyes refreshed, and then open your eyes.
As we mentioned above, this is only a general approach to self-hypnotic practice, not
using some specific technique or method. We will do it in another article.
